The Everyday Life Of A Dancer

By Marissa Velazquez

The everyday life of a dancer is pretty much the same no matter what style is being used. Despite the hard work that has to be done in order to achieve a certain level of success, many still pursue their dream of dancing professionally. This is due to the fact that the rewards outweigh all of the discipline that one has to endure. Here is a look at a typical day in the life of a ballet dancer.

A person in the dance industry usually starts their working day with a warm up class. These classes are very important because they help to gradually prepare the body for the grueling work ahead. The class might last for over an hour and usually involves stretches and other basic movements. When this is over, one is then ready for rehearsals.

When it is time for rehearsals, the body is usually prepared for it due to the preparatory exercises done before. One has to always be sure of changes to the schedules of the rehearsals as they might change for various reasons. One of the main reasons is that many times one of the performers might have an injury and changes have to be made.

When this happens, someone else has to take the place of the injured dancer. This is common in any field when one is using the body primarily as a tool. Rehearsals come in two stages much of the time. The first one is the studio rehearsal which is sometimes open to the public. Various scenes are practiced during this time and techniques perfected.

The stage rehearsals are different from that done in the studio, because the space is larger and has the sets that will be used for the show. The music played is also live which can sound different from what is played using a CD player. So a person will be practicing in a place where the people will see them eventually.

There are times when one has to see a physiotherapist when there is any sort of injury or concern. The body is the most important instrument and one has to make sure that everything is in perfect condition. Being healthy is of prime importance and one has to be sure to eat and sleep well which also helps with preventing unnecessary injuries.

This means eating healthy whole foods and keeping hydrated. Most people stay away from junk food in order to keep their energy up. This enables one to keep up with the demands of their job which requires the use of their body. Sleep is also important, because when one is tired they are more prone to injuries.

This is a snapshot of the life of a dancer in the world of ballet. It requires discipline and very hard work in order to be the best in the industry. Even though the career of a dancer is shorter than most professions, one can look forward to other opportunities if they are very good at their craft.
