Guidance On Web Design Success Is Found Here

By Macy Guilford

Are you ready to learn more about web design? These tips can help you become more successful in web design. If you follow what you learn ahead then you should reach any of your web design goals. You should always be on the lookout for new information from various forums that can help you learn how to start out, or gain more knowledge with web design. A quick online search can help you find a lot of great information.

Don't use splash pages for your site unless required by law, and especially don't use a Flash intro. Most people just want to get to your content as quickly as possible, and don't care to look at useless splash pages. If you have some amusing content that you absolutely want visitors to see, integrate it into the homepage instead.

Be sure to select the correct graphics when designing your website. Bitmap images require a lot of disk space and are unwieldy. For screenshots, text buttons, and other non-photographic images, use PNG if the image has more than 256 colors, and GIF if not. JPEG images are good for pictures.

Check your site in all of the different browsers. What you see on your screen may be different from what others see. Research the most popular browsers and fix your site accordingly. Also check your site with different operating systems.

The best web sites communicate a lot of information in a small amount of words. If you are long-winded, people will easily get bored and find another site that is more concise. Make sure any content is relevant and easy to understand - newspapers use an eighth grade reading level, which is the most common literacy level.

Do not have pop-up windows on your site. Although you may think they are helpful, many people think they are annoying. If customers see these popups and get frustrated, they may not come back to your site.

Every page of your website should have a way to return to the main page, or "home." This ensures that when users navigate deeper into your site, they always have a way to start over if they lose place of what got them to the page they are on currently.

Give your visitors the ability to search your site so that they can more easily find what they are looking for. If someone cannot find what they are looking for right away, their next thought will be to look for a search field. Put this somewhere obvious and include a search button.

Don't accidentally place links on your site that lead to nowhere. The purpose is to ensure that your customer or client is clicking on exactly what they are hoping to find. It is very easy for visitors to your page to accidentally hit a link if it has no text content.

The information you learned can help you design your own website. However, it is important to keep learning. As long as you keep continuing your education, you'll have no shortage of skill in making webpages that work and look great.
